Northern Skies

About me
I'm involved with Space Art and combining Art with Science. I'm a junior at the university of North Dakota, majoring in Physics and Secondary Education and Minoring in Space Studies. This page is a collection of Artwork and Astronomical things.
What I'm interested in:
  • Astronomy & Astrophysics and Science Education
I'm majoring in Physics and Minoring in Space Studies, so of course Something must be said about my intrest in Astronomy and Physics. I was introduced to astronomy from a teacher whom I had for a astronomy course in High School. This course was over distance learning network and without distance learning I wouldn't be doing astronomy today. I'm involved with the Space Studies Department's Planetary Science Observatory, a 18 inch NGT telescope housed in a 21 foot makeshift grain silo observatory dome. The facilities allow me to research my intrests which include Variable Star Photometry, Supernova Detection and Gravitional Lens Time Delay Photometry. The telescope is fitted with the SBIG ST-6 Thermalelectricly cool CCD (Charged Coupled Device) Imaging camera. Hopefully with my Physics Major I can also get a BSED in Secondary Education and put my knowelege and intrest of physics to use in the highschool classroom. What better way to thank the people who got you to where you are then to teach the very thing you were taught by them, to the next generation of scientists.
  • Art Poetry and Quotations
Well as far as art type stuff goes I must say I love Space Art. I have always wanted to go to the places I create on canvas. My favorite medium to exploit has got to be Oils. With Oils I can do almost anything. Until I entered college I liked the abstract artists, like Jackson Pollock, the techniques learn in abstractions frees my mind and dares me to do more and more outragious things on the canvas. I've just become intrested in computer art, I generate images on the computer by composition and using slide show technology and introducing music and video into the slide show I can create an effect unlike any other. I've given these shows to my former highschool and to the community durning alumni art shows at the highschool. People are first not too sure of the technology and attempt to claim its not real art unless I get the floor splattered with paints, but when they get a glimpse of me actually creating the art and the show then they begin to respect the presentation as a artform. My philosophy of art goes like this: Through multimedia, and fractal generation and image composition I can create a joining a joining of two feilds, Art and Science. It is the artworks themselves which are the product of art, and using technology to tie it all into one experence I combine the science side of it such to make a pseudosingularity bonding of the arts and the sciences. My themes are almost strictly astronomy or space based, and will often have a larger meaning hidden under the paint, (whatever that paint may be, image or oil). What I have found out in doing this joining of art and sciecne is this, that on the surface art and science are diffrent, but under the top soil lies a treasure science and art have never been seperate and nor will they ever be. Its up to science thinking artists to take the viewers to the visitas awaiting beyond those horizions. As far as poetry and quotes go I love all of them relating to life or science or art. I will often throw quotes in with my art shows to get the viewers thinking a little.
  • Scanner listening and antenna building
I'm intrested in Radio Astronomy, so obviously I enjoy amature radio and listening to the airwaves over my scanner. so far I've managed to capture the Space Station MIR over my antena system, (a simple dipole located on my roof) and hope to eventually listen to the 50th anniversity of Sputniks Launch into space, by monitering the wavelength that the "Sputnik2" craft will be transmitting on.
